When someone searches for a service near them, Google usually shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. Getting into those three spots is one of the most valuable things a local service business can do, and most of it comes down to your Google Business Profile.

How Google picks the businesses on the map

Google looks at three things:

  • Relevance. How well your profile matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance. How close you are to the person searching, or to the area they named.
  • Prominence. How established and trusted your business looks, based on reviews, mentions around the web, and your website.

You can't change distance. You can improve the other two.

Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile

  • Pick the right primary category. This is the single biggest factor you control. Choose the most specific category for your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
  • List your services. Add each service you offer, with a short description.
  • Set a service area. If you go to customers instead of having them come to you, list the towns and counties you cover and hide your street address.
  • Fill in everything else. Hours, phone number, website link, and a description written for customers, not keywords.

Step 2: Keep it active

A profile that's updated regularly tends to do better than one that was set up once and forgotten. Each month:

  • Add a few new photos of real jobs, your team, and your vehicles.
  • Post an update, offer, or recent project.
  • Answer questions people ask on your profile.

Step 3: Earn reviews, and reply to them

Steady new reviews matter more than a big batch from years ago. Ask every happy customer, and make it easy with a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad, briefly and professionally.

Step 4: Make your details match everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical on your website, your Google profile, and directories like Yelp, Bing, Apple Maps, and Facebook. Mismatched details make Google less confident about who you are.

Step 5: Back it up with your website

Your website is part of prominence. Give each main service its own page, mention the areas you serve, make your phone number easy to find, and keep the site fast on phones. The same work helps you show up in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, which draw on your website, reviews, and listings.

How long it takes

Most businesses see early movement within the first few months, with steadier gains after that. It's ongoing work rather than a one-time fix.

Common questions

Do you guarantee first-page rankings?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. We promise the work and clear reporting: what we did, how your visibility and leads are trending, and what we’re focusing on next.

Do you help with our Google Business Profile?

Yes. It’s a big part of Local SEO. We fully set up your profile at the start, then keep it active each month with posts, photos, and updates, and we monitor and reply to reviews. It’s often the first thing a Rochester customer sees, before they ever visit your website.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Most businesses see early movement in Google Maps and search visibility within the first few months, with steadier gains after that. That’s why Local SEO has a 6-month minimum: it’s the shortest window where the work can show real results.
